Safe and Supportive Environments for All Young People Is a Human Rights Issue

Date: February 23rd, 2017

Healthy Teen Network upholds the need to protect the human rights of all people.

Healthy Teen Network denounces the recent “Dear Colleague” letter issued by the Trump administration, revoking federal guidelines specifying that transgender students have the right to use the public school restroom that matches their gender identity. While the federal law known as Title IX protects against discrimination based on sex, unfortunately, there has been a debate whether this protection extends to transgender people.

While we are in support of U.S. Secretary of the Department of Education Betsy DeVos’ affirmation of the importance of providing a safe environment for learning for all young people, we believe non-discrimination polices related to sex should not vary from state to state. Revoking these federal guidelines fails to protect the rights of transgender young people and can lead to acts of discrimination, hate, and stigmatization.

Healthy Teen Network believes in a world where adolescents and young adults lead healthy and fulfilling lives, and that includes young people who identify as LGBTQ+.
